VINTAGE IBM PC NETWORK MEDIUM DISTANCE KIT — ORIGINAL MASTER LOT
Exceptional original IBM PC Network inventory lot consisting of five (5) matching Medium Distance Kits, P/N 6450232, preserved together in the original IBM distribution/master shipping carton.
LOT INCLUDES:
• 1 original IBM master shipping carton marked Qty 5
• 3 original factory-sealed Medium Distance Kit boxes
• 2 opened Medium Distance Kit boxes containing the same documented original component configuration
A sealed kit and an opened kit were weighed for comparison, and both weighed 15.8 oz, further supporting that the opened kits retain the same original component configuration as the sealed example.
DOCUMENTED ORIGINAL COMPONENTS:
• IBM 8-way splitter marked “IBM Medium Distance Kit”
• RMS CA-2200 tilt attenuator, marked 5–300 MHz and Maximum Power 0.5 W
• FAM-8 8 dB fixed inline F-type attenuator, marked Made in Taiwan
• Approximately 12-inch pre-terminated coaxial jumper cable
• Original IBM PC Network instructions, soft-cover booklet, stapled and three-hole punched. The booklet remains factory sealed and is designed for placement in a binder if desired.
The cable is marked IBM P/N 750191D, RG-6/U, CommScope, UL Style 1478.
The original kit box identifies this as the IBM PC Network Medium Distance Kit and states that this IBM Personal Computer option attaches to the base expander with 400 feet of cable, not included, and that up to eight IBM personal computers may be attached to this kit.
The individual kit packaging retains original IBM inventory markings, including SKU NY6450232, MFG IBM, QTY 1, Network Medium Distance Kit, and a dated barcode label showing 03/06/87.
CONDITION:
Three of the five individual kit boxes remain factory sealed and unopened.
The two opened boxes contain matching documented component configurations. The components examined from the opened kits are exceptionally clean and retain their original finishes. The kits have not been represented as tested or installed.
Minor surface marks/texture are visible on the metal splitter housing and will be shown clearly in photographs. We are disclosing these cosmetic characteristics rather than representing the housing as cosmetically perfect.
The original protective cardboard packaging associated with the components remains present. A small amount of original-looking protective material is also visible around the F-type threads of the RMS CA-2200.
ITEM SOURCE / PROVENANCE:
This item comes from the remaining inventory of ABC Resellers, a Texas computer sales and repair business established and operated by my late father from the late 1980s through approximately 2015.
What began as a home-based business grew into a professional computer sales and service operation specializing in vintage computer systems, legacy hardware, components, software, networking equipment, restoration, repairs, and technical support. My father spent decades working with and supporting computer technology, helping customers maintain older systems and sourcing hard-to-find legacy parts after many of these technologies were no longer readily available.
The inventory from ABC Resellers was accumulated through many years of that work and represents a unique collection of vintage technology spanning generations of personal computing. These five matching IBM PC Network Medium Distance Kits remained together as part of that original business inventory rather than being assembled from separate sources.
This inventory is now being carefully photographed, documented, and individually liquidated as part of the estate process. The quantity and duplication of certain items strongly suggest that portions of the inventory may have been acquired through business liquidations, company closures, or smaller industry sources over the years. However, the specific acquisition history of these individual IBM kits is not known, so no particular acquisition source is being represented as fact.
For this lot specifically, one of the opened kits was opened by us at the original source location solely to identify and document its contents. The second opened kit was found in the same original inventory, but its opening history is unknown. Nothing has been added, substituted, or replaced based on our inspection, and the three remaining kits have not been opened.
The matching five-unit quantity, original IBM packaging, master shipping carton, inventory markings, and preserved components provide a particularly unusual snapshot of legacy IBM networking technology from the original business inventory.
This is an exceptionally scarce configuration. Extensive research did not locate a directly comparable five-unit IBM PC Network Medium Distance Kit master lot or a current/sold listing for P/N 6450232 itself.
Please review all photographs carefully. The photographs document the exact contents and condition of the two opened kits and the packaging for all five kits. Three units remain factory sealed and will not be opened for additional inspection.
