Windows ServerRemote Desktop CALs are needed to enable connections to a Remote Desktop Server Configuration in a network environment. Purchase the amount you require and whether you wish to license each user that connects or each device.

Be certain that you choose the correct version. Lower server releases are not eligible for licenses to later releases. For example: If you purchase 2022 CALs for Windows Server 2025, they would not be valid for 2025, but could still be issued to a session host running server 2022.

Any earlier versions are covered under higher releases. So if you have Windows Server 2022 RDS CALs, they are valid for any server that is running 2008 R2, 2012 & 2012 R2, 2016, 2019 and 2022.

Scenario 1: Office where multiple people use the same workstations during different shifts to connect to a remote desktop session host server to access resources.

Answer: This scenario would be more cost effectively handled with Per-Device CALs. If each user was licensed, you would pay twice the amount for each user on each shift.

Scenario 2: A school where classrooms use several PC's are used by multiple students to access resources on a remote desktop session host server using a generic user account named after the classroom number which all students use to login to different sessions each class.

Answer: This scenario would be more cost effectively handled with Per-User CALs. If each student connected with their own account it would be heavily expensive, but since they are using the classroom login, it would be much less expensive.
