ca1870 KIT CARSON CDV PHOTO / PHOTOGRAPH AMERICAN FRONTIERSMAN AND ARMY OFFICER
Price: US $227.50
Exceptionally rare and original, ca1870 Albumen CDV Photograph of the larger than life Western Americana frontiersman and Indian Fighter Christopher Houston \"Kit\" Carson. Kit Carson was an American frontiersman - a fur trapper, wilderness guide, Indian agent, and U. S. Army officer. He became a frontier legend in his own lifetime through biographies and news articles, and exaggerated versions of his exploits were the subject of dime novels. His understated nature belied confirmed reports of his fearlessness, combat skills, tenacity, and profound effect on the westward expansion of the United States. Although he was famous for much of his life, historians in later years have written that Kit Carson did not like, want, or even fully understand the celebrity that he experienced during his life.

This outstanding CDV Photo measures approx. 2” by 3 3/8\" and is mounted on its original square corner, photographer’s Card Mount (overall size of mount is 2 1/2\" by 4\"). It features a vignette, bust portrait of Carson wearing civilian clothing that was taken in 1868 (the year of Carson’s death) by Alexander Gardner. Kit Carson is pictured with a focused and stern facial expression. The Photograph is a likely pirated Image published shortly after Carson’s death and the Image does not carry a photographer’s mark.

Christopher Houston \"Kit\" Carson was an American frontiersman and Indian fighter. Carson left home in rural present-day Missouri at age 16 and became a mountain man and trapper in the West. Carson explored the west to California, and north through the Rocky Mountains. He lived among and married into the Arapaho and Cheyenne tribes. He was hired by John C. Fremont as a guide, and led \'the Pathfinder\' through much of California, Oregon and the Great Basin area. He achieved national fame through Fremont\'s accounts of his expeditions. He became the hero of many dime novels. Carson was a courier and scout during the Mexican-American war from 1846 to 1848, celebrated for his rescue mission after the Battle of San Pasqual and his coast-to-coast journey from California to deliver news of the war to the U.S. government in Washington, D.C.. In the 1850s, he was the Agent to the Ute and Jicarilla Apaches. In the Civil War he led a regiment of mostly Hispanic volunteers at the Battle of Valverde in 1862. He led armies to pacify the Navajo, Mescalero Apache, and the Kiowa and Comanche Indians. He is vilified for his conquest of the Navajo and their forced transfer to Bosque Redondo where many of them died. Breveted a general, he is probably the only American to reach such a high military rank without being able to read or write, although he could sign his name. Kit Carson\'s alliterative name, adventurous life, and participation in a large number of historical events has made him a favorite subject of novelists, historians, and biographers.

This very rare and wonderful, albumen CDV Photograph is in excellent++ condition. The Photograph exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. Both the Photo and the mount are clean and crisp and well preserved.
