This sale is for a quantity of one four inch 1983 Rockwell 5310 Microcontroller Wafer with one matching new and unused packaged chip. The wafer has good iridescence with large dies and the finished chip has an unusual thermoplastic package with 64 staggered pins. The two of them together make for a great early 1980s period technology display or engineering classroom visual aid. These 5300 series Signal Processors made powerful and versatile controllers for Rockwell's own communication technology based products. During the 1980s they made modems, fax machines, and a wide variety of other communication products. Their ability to make their own chips let them do high tech business on a large scale, but they also fabricated low volume products for the military and space programs. Rockwell was one of the early pioneers of both semiconductor manufacture and microprocessor development. They launched their own line of 4-bit CPUs in 1972. Known as the PPS-4, it is credited by many as being the third true single chip CPU. The PPS-4 was far simpler than the complex 1983 design of this 5310, but in 1972 it was state of the art and Rockwell was one of a very few companies that could build anything like it.
