1770 Disk interface upgrade kit

For the BBC Micro Model B - with 6 page printed install guide

This is a Buy-It-Now sale for a New 1770 DFS Disk Interface upgrade kit, suitable for the BBC Micro Model B only. It is not suitable for the Model B+, but I can supply a kit for that machine if required.

A disk interface kit is required to use a floppy disk drive with a BBC Micro. These come fitted as standard to Master 128s, and most Model B+, but not all Model Bs were fitted with them. Fitting this kit will allow you to use single or double 5.25\" or 3.5\" floppy disk drives, as well as the latest GOTEK USB floppy drive emulators (see my other listings for these).

Some Model Bs may also have the earlier 8271 DFS fitted. These work well with standard DFS, but cannot do double density, or use the ADFS filing system required for some software, especiallywhen using the Raspberry Pi Co-Processor (again, see my other listings).

Easy to fit, and for most installations, there is no soldering required, but Issue 2 or 3 boards may require a small modification to the main PCB, which is detailed in the installation leaflet. Also, if your original 8271 disk interface is soldered onto the motherboard, then one IC will need to be removed, and a jumper soldered in place. If in any doubt, please get in touch.

The controller IC in this kit uses the original WD 1770 version of the chip. This allows maximum compatibility with all types of floppy drive. If using a kit with a 1772 type controller, this is capable of working a little faster with 3.5\" drives, but is too fast to use with early 5.25\" drives, and will cause issues. Using a regular original 1770 allows you to set the slower speeds needed for these earlier drives. The speed setting is done by setting links 3 and 4 on the keyboard, I can provide info if that becomes necessary.

The kit comes with the daughter-boardthat plugs into the original 8271 socket, and also has an additional 40 way socket to extend the height of the board, and protect the original pins. This can be removed if required so the board sits lower. It also comes with two jumpers, two TTL ICs and the Acorn 1770 DFS 2.26, as well as an install leaflet. The 1770 DFS also contains the TUBE host code, so no addiitional DNFS is needed to use a CoProcessor with it.

This kit differs from others you may see available, in that it uses the original WD1770 chip, as detailed above, and also it hangs to the left of the socket, as does the original Acorn upgrade. Kits with a daughter-boardthat hangs to the right can get in the way of the fitment of some ROM/RAM expansion boards.

Note some photos above show a board fitted with a VL 1772 controller. The boards in this listing all use the original WD 1770, as per the first two photos. Any questions, please ask!
