External RP-SMA 9 dBi gain dipole antenna from Alfa for indoor use. Model ARS-N19.This is a 9 dBi gain rubber duck antenna for use with wireless adapters that have an RP-SMA connector on them. This adapter is made by Alfa Networks and has the Alfa logo on the product. Many PCI and some USB adapters have this type of connector. Alfa models AWUS036H, AWUS036NH, AWUS051NH, and AWUS036NEH are all compatible with this antenna, as is any other Wi-Fi adapter with an RP-SMA connector.This measures 15" in height. It is heavy, so some wireless USB adapters, including the Alfa unit mentioned above, may need to be mounted or leaned against something in such a manner to prevent the setup from tipping over.This unit is brand new in OEM factory packaging (non-retail). You will receive the antenna just as shown, exactly as pictured. It has no electronic parts and requires no installation on the computer- simply attach it to the RP-SMA connector on your wireless adapter and it will automatically work. This may seem basic, but just to be clear not all wireless adapters have an external antenna connector. You should only buy this if you know your adapter has an RP-SMA connector. -For indoor antennas, as the gain increases, the vertical path of the antenna usually decreases. Therefore lower gain antennas may sometimes pick up signals stronger that are a a different level than you. This is more common in city areas than single-story home neighborhoods. With a higher gain antenna like this one, you will be concentrating more gain in an outward 360 degree pattern, but will not receive quite as well in upward or downward directions. The antenna can be adjusted to different angles, so repositioning of the antenna may be needed to find the optimal position.Whether I use a 5 dBi omni antenna I already have or this directional one, I see 3 signals, and all of them have the same number of bars in Windows. How can this be?
-antenna placement is very important. Wi-Fi signals bounce around and can be impacted by invisible interference (noise). Also note that when using a utility that reports signals as 4 or 5 bars, each bar represents 20-25% of signal strength. So one antenna may be pulling in the signal 15% better than the other, and yet the difference in bars may be only 0 or 1. We recommend using more detailed programs for precise signal strength analysis.
