Apple Macintosh Portable M5120 5MB - Recapped & Restored
Price: US $1350.00
Here it is, Apple's first laptop computer. Very revolutionary for the late 1980s! This one has been restored, and is working again with a new lease of life.
Here is a brief summary of all the work done to this fantastic Macintosh Portable:
  • Logic board cleaned and recapped using high-quality components
  • New "Hybrid" module will come with unit should current one fail (this was a custom "IC" from Apple so very hard to source)
  • Original battery replaced with 3D printed equivalent spec - runs off battery or power outlet
  • Floppy drive serviced and tested to read/write/eject disks
  • RAM expansion card installed - brings total RAM up to 5MB
  • Modem card installed (not tested)
  • Trackball rollers cleaned for smooth operation
  • BlueSCSI v2 added in place of original 40MB mechanical hard disk
  • Original carry case with user guide and original 7.1 floppy disk set
  • Original and correct power supply/charger (not the grey one from the PB1xx series which is dangerous to this unit).

As was mentioned, in place of the original mechanical hard drive, a more reliable BlueSCSI v2 drive has been installed which uses a SD card for storage.I have installed 7.1.1 but there is ample space to add other OS versions/partitions to allow you to choose your boot option.
The LCD is in good shape with no apparent ghosting, stuck pixels, or darkening around the corners. The speaker iclear. The battery and charging system is working great. To turn on, press any key - simple as that! These Mac Portables actually do get very good battery life despite how large and HEAVY they are.
One of the latches (not load bearing) had cracked and was repaired - see photograph.
Any questions, please ask. I have spent months working on this machine. I take great pride in my work, and it was my personal pride of place in my collection. I am downsizing my collection due to moving and so sadly, I think it is time someone else gets to enjoy this piece of computing history.
Please look over all photos carefully as they are part of the listing.
I would much prefer local pickup in the Austin Texas area but if I must ship, due to the weight and delicate nature of vintage electronics like this, I will get the local UPS store to double box etc and will insure for full listing value.
I have guestimated the shipping cost based on asking the UPS store for approximate cost. Once I ship the item and have the exact cost to me, I will happily refund any difference. I can't use the shipping calculator as it thinks I would just sling it in a box and tape it up. Which isn't going to be a happy ending for anybody, I have seen too many casualties.
Due to the nature of vintage computers, I can not offer a return or warranty on this, so again local pickup and testing is much preferred for peace of mind.
