That was before 1971 when Southwestern Bell standardized all their phone book covers, leaving artist Karl Hoefle out of a job and Dallas telephone subscribers without an intriguing puzzle to solve each year. Hoefle, who died in 1973, spent four to six months each year drawing the covers – always aerial skyline views of the city, but with oddities like horse-drawn carriages on the freeway, clocks reading 7:61 p.m., or motorcyclists flying kites included in the drawings.
