Way back, in the olden days 3½" floppy disks were available in 2 different storage sizes - Low Density (720 kilobytes) and High Density (1.44 megabytes).

The only difference (other than the price tag) was that the Low Density Disks only had one notched side, while the High Density Disks had a notch on both sides.

By placing an extra notch on the 720kb disc it instantly became a 1.44mb disc.
