About this build:This is my lowest-priced full-sized (well, slim desktop anyways) dual-boot PC. With a solid state hard drive, optical CD/DVD drive, dedicated sound and video card, 15-pin gameport, and 100% hardware compatibility in both Windows 98 and XP, this makes for a great retro gaming machine to play games from roughly 1995 through 2003. The Radeon x600 Pro is one of the fastest low-profile video cards you can get with Windows 98 compatibility. You'll see below that it benchmarks incredibly well all the way up to and through 3dMark01. Performance drops off sharply with 3dMark03, so most early generation XP games will play great while any resource-hungry games made from about 2003 or 2004 and later may struggle. Windows 98 game compatibility specifically is really good with this card.
Software:Windows 98SE and Windows XP Pro are both installed in a dual-boot configuration, and you can choose either OS upon boot. No games are installed. Windows 98 has DirectX 8.1, SeaMonkey web browser, universal USB storage drivers (for FAT32 flash drives), an unzip utility, and all drivers for the installed hardware. Windows XP has DirectX 9.0c, Firefox (v52) and Chrome (v49) web browsers, .net framework 3.5, Visual C++ 2005 redistributables, and all drivers for the installed hardware. This computer is completely ready to go out of the box.
