It's something I'm looking at for 7.2. I was going to get it into 7.1, but it's an area I have little/no experience in, so it's going to take a good chunk of time devoted to it.

I've read positive reviews of
aMember Pro for other PHP software projects. I'm fairly certain this could be integrated with Threads by creating a plugin. Your software already has Group Management Permissions. Using a plugin to determine various permissions of a user is one way to go. The paid member database would be managed by the aMember software, and the plugin could sync permission status for users before displaying requested content.
You might already be working on this or aware of a better subscription management system. I'm interested in making it happen and might donate some time to write code if need be.
