I pasted the code you have in my test board and it works fine in ie8 and firefox.
Possibly you have something in the body on load or header insert section in the ubb control panel in html includes that is causing a conflict.
Or you could try just pasting the code in the includes section instead of a file include and see if that works. Sometimes path types make a difference.
