I found these instructions, but they don't match the wording in mysqld file.

Find this line:
SAFE_MYSQLD_OPTIONS="--defaults-file=/etc/my.cnf"

change it to:
SAFE_MYSQLD_OPTIONS="--defaults-file=/etc/my.cnf --log-slow-queries=/var/log/slow-queries.log"
