This seems to be a fairly common problem with IE8 on a variety of sites. Doing a bit of searching I came across this fix posted about the issue with problem regarding Facebook:
For me the issue was Tools/Internet Options/General/Browsing History/Delete Browsing History on Exit. Deselecting that box and now I stay signed in after exiting IE.
