Requirements are:

PHP 5.4 - 5.6
MySQL 5.5+

When editing the config.inc.php file there are several lines with paths.
As long as you get the first 7 or so lines.
Plus the sessions and cache path
The rest can be done in the control panel. But they all must be done one method or the other.

I would also suggest that when viewing paths in the cp that you save even if they first appear correct.
That will ensure that paths that are stored in the db are written to the tables not just the config file..
