[]I think it's one of those "can't please everyone" things. For years people have complained that they don't want moderators to access the CP.
As a consultant, I probably did the same number of jobs removing the admin panel from mods under 6.4 and earlier as I do applying the mod to add admin access back for mods under 6.5.
Ideally this would have been admin configurable as to who could see the admin panel. [/]

It would have been better in fact if, to take your suggestion one step further, admins could control what mods saw in the CP and whether they wanted them to see it at all.
As for people moaning about removing the CP, why on Earth are they giving moderator status to people they don't trust enough to use the relatively simple features that I saw exist? It's not like they could change permissions or assume accounts.
