There is actually a lot of changes at the kernel and driver level that are good for overall security but a lot was also left out because it still has to basically be semi-backwards compatible with all the hardware and software that is already out there on an estimated 300+ million systems.
MS could actually do some really secure and good things but they would have to drop all support for previous versions and much of the software. A boring subject probably for most but if you watch or read some of the in-depth technical articles and not just the media reporter guys that are weak at best you could see some pretty amazing stuff. However since no business is going to drop support and customers for a multi-billion dollar hardware/software industry then a lot of those changes can't happen right away. They really wanted to drop the Registry as it got out of control, but that would cause problems for hardware and software vendors so they had to stay with it for now and just ease in some changes.
There is some cool stuff in Vista, just not worth the hassle as you said like XP bugging you all the time. Vista has a ton of popup messages to alert you when things don't go as they want it to go.

So legal issues aside - would that work? Yes it will work and install on another system, you will have to call and get a new set of install numbers from Microsoft support but currently they won't stop you from doing it. They may ask a couple of questions but you can BS them if you so desire. Personally though I'd stay with what you have if it's working for you. If you buy a brand new PC it will come with Vista if you really want to check it out.

I just bought a brand new one a few weeks ago, that's why I can order the free upgrade. But how the heck would MS know which machine I bought it for? I do have to report the Microsoft COA number from the PC, tho - can they (do they) actually make sure you upgrade that specific copy of XP on that specific machine? Wonder if both XP and Vista can be activated at once... ahh, screw it, I'll stick with XP.

Do they know? Yes they do. Do they enforce? No currently they do not. Will that change? Who knows, we get new legal laws all the time. They have the technology to know but currently do not enforce it.
You have to use the COA because you probably don't have any other legit one. Once you get the CD/DVD in your hands you can install it on whatever you want as long as you know how and it will authenticate and be legit beyond the ethics of the matter.

I was almost taken in by all the hype but dicided to sit on the fence for a while, 6 months and then think about it again.
As it is my Home Pc's are running fine, XP pro and i'm not arsed if i cant get Direct X 4 million lol..
I can guess that there could be some Driver / Hardware issues i may not have accounted for nor microsoft have either.

I'm not planning to upgrade either; the requirements for "ultimate" are insane!
XP itself has grown on me, it's better than 98 which is what i came from prior...
I also have several 2k pro keys (yes, they're legit, go me!) but the only pc's that are using it are 1ghz 256mb ram machines that i need to find something to do with...

I believe in aliens more than I believe in the USDA or any other organization approving a cancer cure; it's bad business to cure diseases ...

Not if you own the cure and nobody else has it. That's darn good business.
Remember, the USDA approves drugs only in which country?
And how many other countries are there?

cancer cruncher, gizzy. Team UBBDev. Need a link? This link? This board is temporarily closed while we update to threads v7. Get some sun - we'll be back soon. I've been running SETI since May 1999, tho...

LOL - I don't have left over cpu cycles Actually not sure why but I typically shut my computer off at night when I'm done using it. Just seems a waste of energy or something.

I have two computers running it. Were there a Mac client I'd have one more. I'm someplace just short of 3 million points right now. Ian is the one we all aspire to, he has 32 million or something.

I've been doing SETI for a while, I stopped once they introduced BOINC though; it's a pain to configure in Linux :/

BOINC is a pain sometimes in Windows, too, trust me. I'd just hate to stop something I've spent almost 8 years on. Even tho I haven't found any ET's yet. Cancer would be a good cause, tho (obviously) - I just wish it shared the same client that I already am running, cuz I'd've split the CPU time between them. (BTW - the Core 2 Duo is crunching like nobody's business - two projects at a time in like a half/third of the time as one on my old Athlon. )

intel has a dual quad (8 core) that has the highest rank for a single PC on one of those sites. It runs 2 Xeon Quad core CPUs and I think they dedicated it to the process.

Tom's Hardware: "Our hopes that Vista might be able to speed up applications are gone. ...and we believe it's safe to say that users looking for more raw performance will be disappointed with Vista. Vista is the better Windows, because it behaves better, because it looks better and because it feels better. But it cannot perform better than Windows XP."

not sure how they can say
'Vista is the better Windows, because it behaves better, because it looks better and because it feels better'
and then say
'But it cannot perform better than Windows XP'
seems to be a contradiction...

Sounds awesome jgeoff; what group are you with on seti?
Yeh I'm refusing to build a pc this year, because I know they're working on cramming cores in them; figure that i'll be able to get a 2.4ghz dual quad in '08 for like $400 lol

Sounds awesome jgeoff; what group are you with on seti? I'm actually just in a group of 2 I started w/ a friend of mine years ago. He's still running an old box w/ Win98SE so obviously I'm carrying all the load.

No one's on ours anymore, the forcing of BOINC vs the old SETI client nerfed all of our clients running at several schools in Cali; so now they don't process a thing (one of our older members is their ex server tech and got permission to waste idle processing)

See, I kept thinking that Vista was a female-dog to load after all the complaints I've been hearing! But I think that's cuz they just didn't know how to do it... After over 12 hours of trying to install Windows Vista, downloading countless drivers that didn’t work and dealing with lots of hardware conflict issues, Anthony figured he was finally qualified to give others a very useful tutorial on installing Windows Vista on a computer running Windows XP. See for yourself how to SUCCESSFULLY install Windows Vista! I present you, here, a short video demonstration on how to install Vista! That makes it so much easier now....
