Just got my copies of Vista Ultimate and Office 2007 Enterprise. Now the question is dare I install both of them on my PC, one of them, or none of them? LOL

Well most of the reviews I've read of RTM Vista code show that many applications are slower on Vista. There are some that are faster though. Most games are slower and those that use OpenGL are up to 1/4 the speed on Vista that they run on XP. xp-vs-vistaHere is the conclusion page http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/01/29/xp-vs-vista/page11.htmlhttp://www.tgdaily.com/2007/01/30/bloggers_slam_vista/Built-in Anti-Piracy / Anti-Copying algorithms at the kernel level. Doesn't sound like my cup of tea and I like Windows .

My friend has a vista look theme its pretty good. But just from the mentions above, i can see my current PC ending its life on XP when ever that may be.
All ready sounds like a Service Pack is needed.

Actually interested in your feedback on Office 2007 - in the beta I found issues with it not wanting to run my older plugins and DDE for some things didn't work well. But it was beta and may work now in RTM.

I have been using office 2007 since they started with the beta last year. I have no problems with it, except I wont be able to afford it when my beta license expires next month No plans to play with vista either.

Well since I make a living supporting Windows here is a little more information to ponder. From here: http://www.openal.org/openal_vista.htmlEAX has become the de facto standard for real-time effects processing. It has been incorporated in hundreds of games and has become the method of choice for game developers wanting to add interactive environment effects to their titles. Some of the best selling games of all time use the EAX extensions to DirectSound 5.0 and beyond, including Warcraft3, Diablo2, World of Warcraft, Half Life, Ghost Recon, F.E.A.R. and many others. Under Windows Vista, these games will be losing the hardware support that came as standard under the previous Windows Operating Systems, and will no longer provide real-time interactive effects, making them sound empty and lifeless by comparison to the way they sound on Windows XP. Welcome to the Creative ALchemy Project Beta Site http://preview.creativelabs.com/alchemy/default.aspxSome applications which use OpenAL: http://www.openal.org/titles.htmlWhich Vista Edition is Right for You? (none ?) (actually a better chart than Microsoft has on their site) http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2068721,00.asp .

Something I have read is that even if you have a 64bit processor you are better running the 32bit version. The other problem for us Brits is that M$ are ripping us off again... We pay twice as much as you do in the USA - if it is $199 over there, it is £199 over here

Something I have read is that even if you have a 64bit processor you are better running the 32bit version. Yes for now typically true as there are not sufficient optimized 64Bit drivers yet. Though hopefully as with each version of Windows since NT 3.1 it doesn't take too long before those drivers become available. Though Vista 32Bit drivers will still be available sooner than 64Bit

you need a new copy with the OEM stuff Yes, legally you would need a new copy. The OEM can only be installed on the same system it was originally installed. Though if you replaced the motherboard and the rest of the computer remains the same .... gets a bit gray in that area but to me it's still the same case and other hardware so it's the same computer.

Are we talking legal ethics here, or, are you saying Vista won't (literally) run on another system? I have two computers: My new one comes with a free upgrade to Vista. Can I install it on my old system (ethics aside ) even thought I've authenticated XP on the new one? (I want to keep XP on my new system, but wanna "try out" Vista on my old one) So legal issues aside - would that work? (My old system doesn't have a legit copy of XP on it, tho. That could stop be right there, right? :/ But I'd do a clean install, so.....?)
GangsterBB.NET (Ver. 7.6.1.1) PHP Version 5.6.40 / MySQL 5.7.23-23 (was 5.6.41-84.1) / Apache 2.4.54 2007 Content Rulez Contest - Hon Mention UBB.classic 6.7.2 - RIP

This is only with OEM Software.
If you check the Retail prices of none OEM you can see that its alot more as in £69 to £250 ish
As ntdoc mentions with OEM there only vaild for that mother board.
I guess on the install you have to Authenticate it, and that's where it all changes.
The first one to talk to microsoft will be valid i guess. And the other will fail.
As the results show, XP is actually faster lol

(none ?) (actually a better chart than Microsoft has on their site) http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2068721,00.asp . I haven't made EAX work on my WinXP machine ever. I'm going to read those links you posted. Thank you. On another note, I think I noticed somewhere here that it's possible that upgrading a machine will cause Vista problems? I'm using the same machine I cobbled together back in 95. Of course every few months or so something breaks or wears out and gets replaced. The last original piece, the floppy drive, was replaced last winter. It's Win2k because my WinXP software made me call Microsoft every time I reinstalled. I'm not even sure Vista will run on this slap dash piece of equipment and I surely don't want to have to be hassled by a legally purchased and registered piece of software over hardware upgrades. I've already got 2 XP licenses I don't and wont use because the machines they were to be installed on received cpu or MB replacements. Still on 2k, don't think they will get upgraded. Why would I buy Vista? Seems to me that it is made for pre-assembled computers purchased new from dell, not for me. I'd love to be wrong, I'd love to move to something newer than Win2k, but what I'm reading is not filling me with good feelings. Am I wrong?

Nope I'm with you on this upgrade David, meaning that I'm not going to upgrade to it on any of my personal computers.
Also if your hardware is older then Windows 2000 is going to operate faster and with less in your face annoyances (IMHO)
Work ones I have no choice as it is now coming with Vista.

So I wasn't wrong?
I'm not sure I've been this disappointed.
Why would they do this? Are they only looking to have the share of the market that comes from people buying new computers with pre-installed software?
