Hi all,
I'm thinking about setting up my first bulletin board and I was wondering how people generate income to off-set the expense? Or, should I just accept that running a board is going to cost me?
Thanks

Unless you have a popular community, and the ads are targeted enough that users WANT to click on them, it's doubtful you'll be able to pull too decent of an income from your forum

I dont know how much truth is in this, but a friend of a friend has just had a problem with google not paying out £400 for there ads in 1 month. It could be that the content was ilegal, other than that, he had been paid for 2 previous months.
The site in question had telephone (Mobile) software, tunes, etc.. and he was pulling 2+ TB Bandwidth a month.
But anyway, has anyone else heard of any issues with google ads not paying out?

Tons of problems with adsense. As Gizmo said, do a search, you'll find all kinds of complaints. I got booted from their program, then let back in. However, their rates were well down by that time. I've since signed on to Yahoo's program. I get over 3.5 million page views per month and have over 10,000 members on my board. Even with all of that traffic, I'm no where close to quitting my day job.

At least for my site and number of clicks, Yahoo ended up paying better than Google. Give it a shot.

Has anyone tried AdBrite or any other Ad network? I was doing decently with Google back in Nov/Dec, but since the new year my revenue has really tanked... was under $100 in Feb so I didn't get a check last month. I'm hovering between 800k-1M page impressions a month. I'd prefer to make the money on eCPM instead of clicks if possible... it's just a pain to get people to click and I've got a decent enough number of page views for my small community (barely over 700 users). I've kinda scoped out a few other networks, but none have really sold me as being worthy of me dumping Google, thus far.

We get over 5 million a month - but Google still isn't wonderful - I am not sure there are any decent options out there....

I think it depends on your website, but have you guys considered direct sponsorship from companies interested in your websites output?

It'd be dandy, but prepositioning companies is something a lot of people don't want to deal with

If your content is that good getting sponsorship shouldn't be too painful - the idea would be to work up a sales pitch and use it on multiple companies - advertising still works

Allen's hit the nail on the head there. I started approaching large companies to sponsor my niche webiste. It was hard at first as they felt they had more important things to spend their money on. Now they come to me. It's more work as they aren't really interested in banners - who looks at banners any more? They know that my site has the right sort of audience, so they want dedicated pages on which to advertise their products. This works our very well, as if my members don't want to be bombarded with ads - they don't have to be. If they are interested in a specific product, they click on a single link at the top of the page. Everyone's a winner
