I know there is a cache time, set in the Control Panel, General, Primary, Who's Online:
Who's Online Timeframe: Users will be listed as online if they have visited within this timeframe (in minutes).

What is the cache time set on this board -- My presence seems to show up sooner than on my board. My cache time is set to 5 minutes. Is it ok to set it shorter?

And then, how soon do people drop off the list? Are they taken out if they have not clicked anything for the number of minutes in the cache time? That wouldn't make sense if you cached every minute.

The Setting you need is

CP >> Portal Settings >> Cache time for Who's Online
That setting will check every X mins and update the current list.

Who's Online Timeframe: Users will be listed as online if they have visited within this timeframe (in minutes).
That's the one for how long they will stay in the list.

I have 3mins for the first setting.
And 60 mins for the second.
