If you're using a map wouldn't you want them to die down quite a bit more and only come back periodically and index more?

With some data yes; but it's a forum, so data is constantly changed; so you don't want them to only check back once a week or so as they will not get content.
They also check the pages for new data, if nothing is new, they'll move on to the next pages.
