The new 7.2 WOL shows forum and topic being viewed. Will there have to be any changes made to custom templates to accomodate this change.

For example my main page is a custom template that displays "Viewing home page" on the WOL page but there obviously isn't a topic related to it.

Shouldn't need to be any change, the newer code is more specific (and is up to the level of the ubb.classic 6.x ack we made a few years back ;))
