Well, I have had a banner on the site for 5 years, never got one customer or nothing from it, just plain gave up.

It is like everyone wants everything for free and when they hear you have to pay a little they run for the hills screaming and hollering.

Pop into a local pet store and ask if they want to sponsor your site Its one way to get money but can be time consuming.

I accept the fact that my site keeps me out of trouble lol
And its worth the overheads for the experience.

Only you will know your members best.
I'm nervous about turning on any subscriptions.

A colleague of mine went to a number of seminars to judge response (from the audience - not the promoters) to paying for membership to an internet site.

Less than five people (5!) in over 5000+ (many seminars) would agree to pay (at least for our subject topic). It could be different for you.

So, what's the option?

Well, we went out and told our advertisers what we wanted, financially. We told them (the truth) that we had their target audience. They agreed to pay.

I doubt I'll ever be rich, but it's way better than 1c/click! (Or whatever it is these days.)

Please don't give up my friend, there are always options.

50 new members this month, we get around 10,000,000 page hits a year and nothing.

We kill member accounts if they never post within 30 days of registering, that is about 60% of them or our member numbers would be over 3,000 in the 5 years.

We also clear out the threads over 1 1/2 years old too. try to keep it neat.

The "Donate" button helped some, I put it up in mid Jan and received $360 so far from that though.

This is a good point.
But why just think local?

If your site is reaching dog owners internationally, why not contact the food manufacturers direct?

Be Brazen!

Tell them your site is the best!
Try to sort out a way to display their manufacturers notes/ pdf's / recalls etc etc

Tell them that you have all the breeders queing up to view your site.

Remember, more content [supplied by manufacturers] means more hits/ page views - and that means more manufacturer money!

...and don't be shy, they can only say no

BTW -- We're talking 'MARKETING' here....

It's entirely up to you, but if your (potential) sponsor sees 422 registered members, I suspect he is less likely to sponsor you, than a site that has 3,422 members.

I understand. Since the Uno winning and the new site launch my traffic has been up perhaps 250% in registrations and site postings.

Working on doing dedicated server hosting in the near future very cheap. Would be a plus for a person who has a nice site and wants the entire server at a cheap price too.

I'm looking into several things for this year to try to get a few decent customers but it is hard to compete with these large corporations out there giving half a gig of space for $8 a month.

Why doesn't hotmail tighten up on there registration process?

On topic with original subject - it appears that more and more ISP and Free mail account sites are starting to use port 587 to slow down the SPAM at least a little more.

Well better Hotmail than Yahoo. Yahoo doesn't even appear to have an dedicated Admin for it even for an ISP so you have to play the merry go round even if you're a big player too

Yahoo's dialup/dsl divisions are just debranded SBC (not even that, since you can clearly see it in "SBC Yahoo Dial"); and we all know SBC is a joke as a company ... (Since they bought out Prodigy, and turned one of the best dialup isp's into crap, they'll always be regarded to me as a joke)
