Your hotel is very small. A couple of weeks crashed out on a white sandy beach sounds like a great idea right now.

Canon's 40D is nice too, I've been using it about 9 months with good results. It balances out the larger lens a little better than the rebel series.

I figure best to get a good camera body and then over time you can spend on lens and other stuff when you can. If I buy too low then I'll be hard pressed to buy another body for a long time - sort of better to have too much than be upset that you didn't get enough when you could afford it.

Most professional photographers would say the lens makes a bigger difference in quality of image than the body. Buy a body you can afford with the knowledge you'll probably upgrade it every few years. A quality lens will last you a lifetime with proper care.

Canon have today launched the 1000D - looks a nice entry level camera. I must admit that I have not used my 1D MKIII for a good 6 months Miss using it, but my health has not been up to it - plus I am going through a divorce and my children moved in with me in March - so battling daily and just do not have the ability to take photos at the moment. I am still a member of the Chartered Institute Of Journalists here in the UK - so hopefully one day I will get back to using it....

Agree - a body might last 18 months, but a lens can last a lifetime (and cost 2 or 3 times the body!)

As mentioned - take a look at the new Canon 1000D which looks like a great entry level DSLR - http://www.dpreview.com/news/0806/08061002Canon1000D.asp

I find the CF cards way bulky... And the SD cards cost like nothing to produce, so they end up cheaper for larger capacity cards...

You don't like the SDHC? I love 'em personally... The CF card just seems more sturdy and writes faster. The SDHC though is catching up for speed, but have had 2 of the cheap brands go bad from rough handling I think. Secure Digital CardDigital SLR camerasSD has not conquered the market for Digital SLR cameras. In this market CompactFlash remains the most popular format due to its historically lower price/capacity ratio, better read/write performance, and the availability of larger capacities. As of 2007, however, an increasing number of models use SD/MMC/SDHC cards exclusively: Pentax's complete line since the 2004 *istDS; Nikon's 2005 D50, 2006 D40, 2006 D80, 2007 D40X, and 2008 Nikon D60; and most recently Canon's 2008 EOS 450D/Rebel XSi. Several high-end professional DSLRs — notably Canon's EOS-1Ds Mark III and EOS-1D Mark III — support both CompactFlash and SD for greater flexibility and storage capacity.

Much prefer SD - but for the best use a large CF as well and make a copy of the image to CF and work with the other copy on the SD card, which I can easily transfer to my laptop. Therefore I have a backup

I have no idea what you're talking about so I'm going to change the subject.
I don't understand you Brits. You amaze me. You make, like 5 pence a year. Pay 10 in taxes. It costs 20 for petrol and travel expenses. Rent is 50. Food is 35. You're on holidays 78 of the 52 weeks a year. Yet somehow you manage to make it all work. I'm amazed. I don't understand how it works.

ROFL - How well do you know and prefer SD Yeah, backups - and not just a single backup are essential and a never ending task - or you will get bit by it one day when you least expect it according to Murphy's Law.

Exactly Dave.
The wages vs the spending just don't add up. Yet they seem to be doing better than the US these days.
