I know I'm one of the major people who pushed for Captcha's in the UBB, so I had a big idea... Some users (a select few) won't have IM or GD compiled into GD; so how about another option? Recaptcha(I'd like to also note that I'd love to see NetPBM as another supported Image Processor in the UBB) A few notes about recaptcha: reCAPTCHA improves the process of digitizing books by sending words that cannot be read by computers to the Web in the form of CAPTCHAs for humans to decipher. More specifically, each word that cannot be read correctly by OCR is placed on an image and used as a CAPTCHA. This is possible because most OCR programs alert you when a word cannot be read correctly.
But if a computer can't read such a CAPTCHA, how does the system know the correct answer to the puzzle? Here's how: Each new word that cannot be read correctly by OCR is given to a user in conjunction with another word for which the answer is already known. The user is then asked to read both words. If they solve the one for which the answer is known, the system assumes their answer is correct for the new one. The system then gives the new image to a number of other people to determine, with higher confidence, whether the original answer was correct.

I just upgraded from UBB.classic 6.7.0 to UBB.threads 7.4.2 and want to implement CAPTCHA. I found the reCAPTCHA site, and have a free account, but now what do I do?

To implement it that would be in the control panel.
Question
1. Will you be using gd or imagemagick?
2. How do you plan to use captcha. For Guests?

UBB.T7 has a built in captcha; you won't need recaptcha to use it; simply enable it in the forum settings.

I don't know which is best suited for my forum, GD or Imagemagick. I tried to implement it in the control panel, but it says 'disabled' and a note saying "It appears you do not have access to GD2 or Imagemagick."
How do I change it from 'disabled' to 'enabled' in the control panel?

If it says disabled then you A) don't have GD2 with Freetype available, and B) You either don't have ImageMagick6 installed or it's not configured in the Paths section of the control panel.
I'd contact your host. It's possible they have ImageMagick6 available to you, and you'll just need to know the path to the convert executable.

I prefer IM; especially since they provide binary files that users can install on their own

I'd like to bump my original posting about ReCaptcha; I was trying to setup a client site the other night and they didn't have either GD or IM available, ReCaptcha would have been perfect in this situation since all they'd need would be to sign up for an API key... I'd also eventually like to see NetPBM added as a supported image processor.
