Hi,

I'm trying to install the demo version of UBBThreads. In the documentation says I need to run install.php.
But in the downloaded ZIP file is no file like that present.
Is this correct? Or am I doing something wrong?

If you look in the .zip file, you should find an INSTALL file, as well as an install.html... which include the following set of instructions:

Install instructions.

1. Move all files into a PHP enabled directory.

2. Edit main.inc.php. The only line you need to edit in this file is the
one that contains the $thispath variable. You will need to change
$thispath to the actual path of your ubbthreads installation.

3. Edit config.inc.php. The variables in this file control the database
settings used, path variables, special functions, etc.

4. Edit theme.inc.php. This file contains other special function settings
along with some look & feel settings.

5. You will need to create the database to be used either by using
mysqladmin, with something like 'mysqladmin create databasename' or
contact your host and have them create a database for you.

6. Depending on your sql settings you may need to grant privileges to
access your sql database. For instance, for mysql you would type
./mysql from the command line and enter the following lines below.

GRANT SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, CREATE, DROP, ALTER
ON forumdatabase.*
TO nobody@localhost
IDENTIFIED BY 'password';
exit;

Make sure to change forumdatabase to the name of the database you will be
using. Also nobody and password needs to be changed to match your
settings in config.inc.php

7. You will want to move the directories /images and /stylesheets into your
HTML tree. The locations are referenced in the config.inc.php file

8. Now you can bring up createtable.php in your webbrowser and it will
create your tables for you and give you a link to add your admin user.

If you have any problems with getting it up and running after this, let us know!

Why don't you include the install script with the demo version?
I am trying to evaluate your software but this manual installation is really time consuming especially knowing that you have an install script in production if I am willing to 'Buy before I Try...'

The demo version is still running on an older codebase that is currently not compatible with the install script. Still working on some 5.5 bugs so I haven't been able to work on the install script for the demo version yet.

I am a novice web builder, but I managed to get the UBB trial up and running. I like it, but I want to see how the UBBThreads works (I cant afford to pay for two licences for my non-profit site).

Without the install.php I am having difficulty installing it. Also, I cannot be sure of MySQL settings, because I cannot speak German and that seems to be the only language my Host company here in Switzerland seems to provide.

These are the errors I get when I go to createtable.php

Okay, I manage to fix those problems. But I have got to the stage where I have entered my admin and got a password. This looks nothing like UBB. Can I get it to look like UBB? How?

I mean, I really want to purchase one of these, wether it be UBB or UBBT. But, really, at this stage it is like buying a sports car, and only being allowed to drive it back and forth in the yard. Too many features are disabled.

Have you visited the board at UBBCentral.com? That is a full version demo board we have installed so that you can see all the features.

Well, mine still looks nothing like the UBB central board. And none of the images are working.
So far all I have is plain HTML text on a white background. I have no way of troubleshooting this....
Okay, now the UBBCentral board means I can be a passenger in the car, whilst the salesman drives me around the block....
If I don't get some help soon I will look elsewhere.

Sounds like the stylesheet is ineffective. Make sure the "stylesheets" folder and it's contects are properly uploaded.

I can't recall how many stylesheet options the demo has, but I think it's more than one. So, you might also try enabling a different stylesheet via Control Panel/Display Preferences.

okay, I have that problems fixed. The relative url was set to the wrong images folder. but now another arrives.

I have tried to put a post on and I get the following error message:

We encountered a problem. The reason reported was:

The host you are trying to send the input from is not a valid host.

What the hell does this mean?

But I get the error that the page cannot be found in my web browser. Is there something else that I need to do to see/run createtable.php.

It is a unix server, all files were installed in the directory:
/domain/httpdocs/ubbthreads

Now it is possible that I missed some of the stuff in config.inc.php. Most of that stuff is greek to me. I was surely wishing that it was as simple as the Install Instructions made it out to be. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

Hemmingway: The url you're trying would help. Other then that I'm just guessing.

Itcom-ilo:
" have PHP installed on my serve but do you have to use the version in your memebrs area?"

<img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> We don't have PHP in our member area. We have just the UBBThreads downloads. As to your question - As long as you have a non beta version of PHP 4 installed on the server you should be fine. If you find that you need to update your PHP you can download it at www.php.net. We do not provide PHP itself.

http://uooutpost.org/httpdocs/ubbthreads

Thinking that I had done something wrong, *grins* I blew away everything in an attempt to start over again. But.....ran out of time.

But based on the previous questions, is there a premission I need to set on httpdocs or ubbthreads?

I finally mananged to get everything installed again. I edited the main.inc.php and config.inc.php to the point where my tables were created and it brings me to the New User Screen. I input a new user and a valid email adress and hit submit and I end up here:

http://www.uooutpost.org/httpdocs/ubbthreads/adduser.php

The page cannot be found.

I am assuming that I still have something configured wrong in one of those 2 files but being that this is my first attempt at anything like this, well, suffice to say it is all greek to me at this point.

Anyone shed some light on what I may have configured wrong and put me back on the right track.

I hate bumping threads. And I will admit that web page design, and ubbthreads installation is not exactly what I am best at, but, I do have the space, I do have the domain, and I do need some type of thread software to install there.

I thought after seeing that Stratics used UBBThreads adn reading the forums here that this would be a good choice. And after reading the installation instructions, it seemed that even I could accomplish it.

But as it was to be discovered, the install.php that I read about in the demo download was not working. There was supposed to be an HTML file explaining the proper procedure to install the demo, but it was nowhere in the zip file I downloaded. I located that from another post and followed the instructions there. I was actually doing pretty good, managed to get the files copied over, set the premissions right, or so I thought, ran into a couple of errors, managed to fix those and actually got the tables created by running createtable.php from my web browser at the following link:

www.uooutpost.org/httpdocs/ubbthreads/

From there createtable was ran and the tables generated with no errors. I am presented with the screen to input a new user and a valid email address. I do just that and press submit, only to see that the adduser.php cannot be found.

Please point me in the right direction. Is it a premission problem on the ubbthreads folder? Do I still have something wrong in the main or config files. That is highly possible as the differences in paths and url's were greek to me before last week. Never really had a need to know anything about them. And it is not that I have not tried. I have read most every post in this forum along with the ones at threadsdev.com on installation problems. And there are alot of them that almost......almost answer the question, then the person come back and states "Oh, I got it fixed, it's working now" without stating HOW they got it fixed and the thread drops to oblivion.

Please, point me in the right direction. I really do like the look of UBBThreads, I liked waht I read about it, I even liked the simple install that it appeared to have. And it may with the full version, but I would like to at least see if a novice can set this thing up and run it before I spend my hard earned money on it.

Thanks.

It looks like you have a url problem. The link you posted was to this:

http://www.uooutpost.org/httpdocs/ubbthreads/adduser.php

when actually, it is this:

http://www.uooutpost.org/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php

I think you need to remove that httpdocs portion from your $config[phpurl] variable in your config.inc.php file for it to work properly.

I guess if I attempted to learn this during the normal part of the day vs 2:00 am it would probably be a little eaiser.

I actually realized that as soon as I read your reply. *slaps himself in the forehead* I changed the paths and the URL's in the appropriate files and managed to get to a new user registered. But after attempting to log in that new user, it kept telling me that the password was incorrect. I figured that since I had made it past one hurdle, I'll just go to sleep now and work on the rest tomorrow. After the brain gets a little rest.

Thanks again for the reply. It did get me back on the right track and I'll continue on from here.

But.....one quick question. Reading from the installation docs it seems that the retail version is really eaiser to install than the Demo version. If I am reasonably sure that I will purchase one of these products, would it be eaiser on me to go ahead and purchase UBBThreads and install it, or continue playing with the demo.

Playing with the demo will give you a basic feel for the program but it is very limited as to what can be done. Also, it's based on the 5.2 version. It will be updated once 6.0 is out and stable.

The full version is much easier to install as it has an install script to help with the paths/url settings, etc.

Everything is working now. I guess alittle sleep does wonders for the brain!

Is there a performance issue in the Demo vs the retail product. I only entered a few post just to test with and it seem tht it takes an awful long time to load a single thread. Or prehaps is it the server that I am running it on?

It is a hosted server running unix. Is it possible that the MySQL can be tuned to preform better? What about this cache I have been reading about, does this pretain to the 5.1.2 Demo also and it could actually get better as time progresses?

I really like the look and feel of UBBThreads so if I was to purchase the retail version, what to do with the Demo version. Blow it away, or will the upgrade install over it?
