I recently upgraded my forum to 7.5 and split it into two halves. The halves are here -

keet forum -

wine forum -

They're on the same server, just in different directories.

For some reason now when you first go to the keet forum it is REALLY slow to draw and sometimes times out. The wine forum is always fast, no problem.

In both cases I have completely deleted the now unnecessary forums and posts, so both are smaller than before. I have optimized the forum and post table on both systems, so that they are running cleanly with their new data. That keet forum should be faster than before, not slower.

Once you get INTO the keet forum it's fast to move around in it - it's just that initial first draw of the main page that really is slow.

Any ideas?

FWIW, I just clicked on that link and it loaded very quickly.

That link loads nice and quick for me.

I'm using Fire Fox will try IE just now.

IE7 Nice and quick too.

I'm using FireFox - I just clicked the link and it's still super slow.

I'm logged into both forums as an admin - I wonder if that is causing it. I'll do some tests of going there when I'm not logged in vs logged in as a person vs logged in as an admin to try to narrow it down.

I want to post that I've verified this is a problem.

Both forums are on the same server and apparently share cookies which is fine by me since the vast majority of entries are "duplicate". Maybe this is contributing to the problem.

When I am logged out, both forums load quickly. No problem.

When I log into my admin account on the wine site, and then go to the parakeet forum, it is very slow to load up the first time.

Here as well.. quick enough..

There was a reported post on this issue as far as if you have a lot of unread posts. It would slow down. Maybe you have an excessive number of unread posts when you split the forum up.
Try the mark all as read option and see if that helps.

I'm assuming you changed the cookie prefix on the new forum? Otherwise, you may have problems to begin with with that:P

Gizmo - no, that is what I'm saying - they use the exact same cookies. That way someone who logs into one is automatically logged into the other one. It works really well and is quite cool.

So if I log into the wine forum, and tab over to the lisashea forum, I am now logged in there as well.

Hmmmm the mark all as read idea seems to have worked! I marked all as read in the lisashea forum and have gone back and forth. It seems to be quick now on that initial draw. So would that affect all users who are logged into the lisashea forum but who have not read every single post?

It's not necessarily that they need to read every post. It kind of compounds. It looks like you have maybe 200 forums or so, give or take 10 or 20

When you have full post tracking turned on (the little red numbers next to the topics/posts) it works like this. If the last post time is greater than the user's last visit to that particular forum, it has to do a query to see how many topics/posts have been made since that last visit.

So, if you have 2 forums with unread posts, that's only a couple extra queries so that's not too bad. But say you have 150 forums with unread posts. That's 150 extra queries to load the front page. Unfortunately those aren't simple queries either and they can't be done in one big query. Each have to be done individually.

Honestly, with the number of forums you have I'd really consider turning off full post tracking.

You have mentioned the full post tracking setting in a few different posts.

In the control panel it says:
Under Forum summary options
"Show total # of unread posts per forum"

This is what you are referring to correct?
