I don't think we really need an IM client built into the UBB; look at the thousands of huge/free ones that are readily available...
Plus, comeon, how many users do you really have online at the exact same time?

Not necessarily, there was a chat mod for classic in 6.3 era; I didn't really see much popularity in it

I had a chat room through raidersoft a little bit ago and it was quite popular (dropped it for financial reasons). A majority of my visitors are high school-aged males, so they love to gab.

Well, for those that want a chat option in general, theres a thread over at ubbdev ( here) which gives you several options; my pJIRC addon for example lets you use one of the millions of free IRC chat servers and integrate it into your forum...

chat = public.. everyone can see it
instant message = private instant message to just who you want..
I have a chat solution that works on my site... but the IM option is something different and I like it.

Well, I mentioned the chat option for JAISP's comment on not being able to afford a chat server ..

flash chat is $5, and can be fully integrated into UBB.. I set it up on my site, not using it, but I made sure it worked.

chat = public.. everyone can see it Only members of my UBB can participate in the chat. Others can click on it but they can not see the chat it self or chat them selves.

I meant as in IM is a one on one conversation that no one else can see where as you talk in a chat room, anyone else in the room can see it.

The chat I have has both private and public chat. You may chat in both at the same time with several people at once. I have it integrated into the UBB database as so members do not need to sign up for the chat but rather just be logged in to the message board.

Building a php based IM client and server into threads would be a full time job for a developer all by itself. Rick is one guy....

What? I can't agree with you any more? That would mean you have in the past... Which makes me wonder which of my statements before you've agreed with...

I also have flash chat implemented and working.. just haven't put the link up.. they are happy for now with the java chat that they are using that is being run by a friend of mine... I think the flash chat is more feature rich and a better fit, and I may flip the switch on them yet.

Maybe something akin to the Facebook way, with a popup buddy list?
That would be uber I will chime in here and give a bit of info on what we'll working towards. Somewhat like Facebook, I do want to have a status bar that sticks at the bottom of the screen. Instead of a flashing envelope next to My Stuff when you have a new private message, there would be some type of indicator in the lower bar. There will be an area that will show how many of your UBB Buddies are currently online, eventually with a way to send them some sort of message. We'll never be able to do a full fledged instant message, but we could do some type of AJAX check similar to the shoutbox that checks to see if you have a new message every 30 seconds or so, even when you're idle. Also a notification area, things like when someone replies to one of your posts, sends you a private message, posts a comment on your profile, etc. All of those would go into the notification area at the bottom, again similar to facebook's notification. They handle that quite well, so I'd like to do something similar. I have many, many ideas for improving the user interface, which is why I can't wait to be finished with the CP

I am not so sure I like the notification moved to the bottom though. It is easy enough now for me to overlook the flashing envelope on occasion.

Trust me there will be more options. I know a lot of people like in your face stuff, so one option will be to present a in-your-face modal dialog box when you get a new PM.

I'm sure if the people are anything like those I deal with you will need a loud alarm, flashing lights, and a big sign in the middle of the monitor to get their attention for that. I have members that have been in one of my communities for 2 years and still have not read their welcome PM.
That should be an option anyway and not mandatory that it be sent for new registrations.

if the notification is on a static bar at the botom of the screen, not hte bottom of the page, that would be great
