Everyone is talking about adding face book here but I just don't get it. Rick added a island with a link for UBB but still I don't get it. Fans listed start with Nancy. Who is that? Some tabs list photos, wall, info, photos, boxes. Is this something like twitter or what. I guess I am to old to understand the use of such a thing. And I guess I need remedial education.

Well, fans are just that, people who've fanned it... Anyone with a fb account can "fan" a group, it just shows that they like it...
facebook can be kind of like twitter, where you can list status updates; but it's got a bunch of more options...

Okay Giz, I guess the 50++X generation does not see a use for it.

I was in your mindset for the longest time Ruben. Didn't get the whole facebook or any social-networking appeal, so it's not just the 50+ generation. I started using it just to see if there was anything there that we could use and I now see the appeal.
The biggest thing with fan pages is it's just another way to get the word out about something. We plan to use a few features of it, things like having an option for announcements to be posted to a specific facebook page. Users will be able to turn on an option so whenever they make a new topic it will post that to their facebook account (if the admin has turned it on of course).

I started with myspace, then went to facebook, didn't get facebook at first, now I used it more than myspace (hardly use MS at all actually) and I'm slowly working on twitter, though my life isn't interesting enough for me to post about every 5 minutes, but I do find it useful for following other sites and people... I glean all kinds of interesting info, find great deals on stuff, near instant news.

I do with facebook the same thing as with almost all my social networks, I make an account, and click accept when somebody wants to add me Only thing I actively use is Twitter, and post pictures through it using the service http://mobypicture.com. Even got a little scriptlet that posts the pictures posted through mobypicture on my board.

I can't stand myspace. At all. Flying freakin circus. I do use facebook, though the fact that I look at my page and have to click hide on 6 or 8 apps every day, just to see new content makes me crazy. I'd love to be able to hide/ban all apps. I also understand why people love twitter, though I personally don't. I like LiveCLoud a lot, obviously.

How do you guys figure out who is who? The only way I figured out Rick is because I see David D. was a friend there.
Or David became a friend of a stranger! LOL

This is quite fascinating to say the least.
In my one community I had the fields that are for adding fields made private that they can not be seen by others and used them to put the persons REAL NAME, TOWN - CITY, State - Provence, and Country.
Many of the users complained it is a privacy issue to have that information in my database that can not be seen by anyone other then me but those same users would then later advertise their real name and stuff for these online communities you all are talking about. Go figure.

it isn't a privacy issue if you make it clear in your privacy statement how and why you collect that info, and how it is or isn't shared... they AGREED to those terms when they VOLUNTARILY signed up for your site.

Not sure... my kids say that MySpace is old school has been.
I see the appeal to some, but we could do without the zealots trying to force it on you.

I like having the option to integrate.
I set up a twitter account for my website thinking I would use it to blast out random things, tips, whatever.. but I can't use the widget on my website, it breaks it. (widget breaks UBB)

(widget breaks UBB) I have it working fine on my site; I had to update their code to be xHTML valid, but it's working without any issues...

when I was using it, in the full reply/full post mode, the pop up menus for things like smiles, or to insert an image weren't showing up.
