I know in some prior version, the administrator was able to view PMs sent/received by users.
Is this still available and if so, where/how?
TIA.

No direct way to view them, other than actually looking at the database itself.

well, you can 'become user' and then see what they see... i rarely use that feature though, because i feel 'dirty' snooping.. in my case, i do it to help a user out who is 'seeing something strange' and i need to duplicate it..

Yeah, I don't want to snoop but I am trying to figure out all the features. Someone said they could be read - I wasn't seeing it. Aside from the question of whether it's sleazy for an admin to read PMs, I'm too lazy to snoop.

I believe there is a hack for vbulletin that allows admins to read them. Maybe that's what the people were talking about.

I'd love a way for admin's to monitor "reported" private topics; but just being able to access and view them at leisure is a bit "privacy violation"ish...

I think that there should be a way that ADMIN can see the PM's without having to 'become' the user...
I have already had verbal abude from one user to anouther that met on another forum and the one member was completely ridiculous with what he was saying!
I hate becomeing the user though, bec ause then it shows them as being online and other memebrs see that and wonder what is going on...
There should be an option in V8 if possible in my opinion...
As much as I agree with privacy, it is also our duty as owners/admin to keep the peace and this would be a very helpful tool...

100% in agreement with Tom... We can retain privacy with the safety of our users by: I'd love a way for admin's to monitor "reported" private topics...

A little extra effort for me is better.
It takes an additional "psychological" step for an administrator to dive into PM's.
In our Exchange Environment as an admin I cannot just open a users mailbox, I need to give myself permission first to do that, and that's the way I like it.

I have no heartburn using the become a member either. When needed to support a member. What I don't like about the feature is going back and forth to several members. What I don't understand about the feature is what happens if the real user tries to login while doing so?
I still push for a stats page for a global view of PM's just to judge for instance how many members are using PM's and how many total PM's there are per member. I would rather be proactive and adjust the PM limits and or warn the user they are reaching their limit.

I agree with the red dude with the pitchfork - PMs really should be private. Twice I've needed to 'investigate' but would vindicate myself due to the fact that one guy was trying to get members to go to a rival site and the other was a spammer. The first suddenly became a pre-teen the second is banned.

There at least needs to be a way to see if users are sending spam to others via PM so at least would be nice to have a counter page via admin CP to see how many PMs sent per user, weekly or monthly.

I like that idea. Shouldn't be too awful to implement.

I added this to our rules to address accessing PMs. What do y'all think? Any additions or changes needed?
"Concerning the PM system - we respect the privacy of our members and under normal circumstances would never have desire or reason to look at a member’s PMs. If you are repeatedly breaking the rules, threatening or harassing someone, then your account may be subject to review, including the admin checking your PMs. One or two rule infractions will not result in your PMs being checked. Moderators do not have access to member’s PMs – only admins."

It is your board and your site. So do what is needed. My 2 cents is I don't even look at a pm unless I use the become a member. And then only when approved by the member to resolve a issue.

When there are threats or harassment, we consider a member's right to privacy with our PM system forfeited.

I understand. IMO, I would like to see a notify option like Gizmo suggested. In addition enhance the ignore member to allow including PMs or not. And a tool to just get a overview of PM's in general to see if groups are starting to exceed their limits.
