Oops you need to find out what the problem is.
Did you enable the log option in the control panel?
And can you get to the control panel?

No to both questions?
There is another way to see the actual error but you would need to edit one of the script files. And it will display the actual error to anyone that visits the site. Including info that they should not see so it should only be turned on for a short time.
Can't recall the file name and line but I will look it up.

Start with this:
FTP to the site.
Open includes/config.inc.php
If it is blank or missing info on lines especially the top 7 or so lines then that file got hosed somehow.
Those top lines have all the path and login info for the database and forum.
If it is hosed you can either manually edit the file or upload a file from a backup.

The next is what I mentioned above.
Ftp to libs/mysql.inc.php
Edit the file search for
$showerror = 0
change it to:
$showerror = 1
Save it and visit the site it will show you what the actual error is.
When you are done change it back to:
$showerror = 0

And enable the logs in the control panel for future.

Had a bad username for the database user in the config file.

Well that will do it for sure.
Only question is how did it get there.
