I deleted the files off the server by accident when I was trying too upgrade. Do I need the database files from the server to restore my boards? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

The database holds all of your posts and most settings except for a few which is in includes/config.inc.php. So yes you need to keep it where it is. Do you have a backup of your files? If you do just upload them to where they used to be. and it should be fine without doing anything else.

Ok, here is a little more info. I did not back up the boards. Stupid, I know. During the upgrade process, it says to upload all files except certain ones. So stupidly I thought I would just delete those files then upload everything. Except stupidly, I deleted the ones off of the server, instead of the computer. Any chance to get my boards back to where they were? It is coming up a new install instead of an upgrade.
Thanks in advance.

Okay so it sounds like you deleted the php/script files but not the database. The reason you don't upload over the existing ones is because they hold settings/features from your existing board. You should not delete them unless instructed to do so.
Then uploaded the newer version. Then ran upgrade.php And the upgrade did not finish to update the database due to things like config.inc.php were missing.
First thing is you may consider opening a support ticket. Rick just may fix it for you.( probably the best option)
After that not knowing what version your were on and trying to upgrade to. It is hard to tell.
You could install the original version (if you have it)then select another database. then go back and edit the config.inc.php file to look at the real database. then start over with the upgrade.
I know this sounds greek but people that have been using this software it is not that big a deal. It is really kinda simple. Once you have lived through this once.
There are a few other options but if you don't have that warm comfy feeling then I suggest going with Rick.
If you want to attempt this on your own. the first item would be the config.inc.php file. After re-uploading the original version Which Gizmo did post a generic file to use but you would need to go through the complete control panel to confirm all the changes.
So again. I would ask with a support ticket to mindraven. Or ask some of us to fix it.
Either way that person will need access to the site with ftp access and access to the site control panel for the mysql database.

Well, there is simply no undelete; once you purge files you're pretty much screwed. I have a generic config.inc.php file somewhere to get you started, you'd put this in your includes directory and then access your cp (after editing the file).

I tried downloading the zip file but it won't open. WinZip says it is not a valid archive.

Looks like uploading .zip files here gets corrupted; I uploaded it to here for the time being.

Does anyone know if I run the boards through a new install, will it wipe out my boards and posts? I uploaded the config file in seversl different places and this is what I get when I go to the install.php page:
SQL Error: Unable to connect to database server, please try again in a few minutes.SQL Error: Unable to connect to database server, please try again in a few minutes. Fatal error: Call to undefined function upgrade_header() in /home/mystuff/forums/install/upgrade.php on line 67
I uploaded the file in several different places, under forums, admin and install. Any suggestions? Thanks.

First thing you need to do is edit the config.inc.php file. The first few lines are critical. you need to enter your existing database name and user password and path to the database. There are other paths if you look farther down. But they can be edited later from the control panel. Then upload it to the includes folder.
If you are uploading the same version files before the attempted upgrade. You would not need to run the upgrade or install. it should just start working(i believe) if your database is still intact.
Once it is running I strongly suggest you go to every option in the control panel. And even if the info looks correct still select the submit button.

BTW, Never run the install script for a existing board. Because it will try to re-create the config file as well as all the tables in the database.

You guys are lifesavers! Once I put it in the includes files, it started working. Now, it looks as if the tables may be broken or I am missing another file. http://www.messagecentral.net/forums

like I said there are several more settings to go through. If you can access the control panel now. Go to each and every setting and select submit. remember the config file you used is a generic one. If you still can't get to the control panel open the config file again in a text editor and look for settings you know such as any url's or paths. Then upload it again.
Right now it looks ugly because there are still settings that are incorrect.

Just as a clue. Right now your forum is at http://www.messagecentral.net/forums/But all the links(faq,login,etc) goto: http://www.messagecentral.net/threads/So that would be a clue that your paths are currently set at /threads in the config file where they need to be changed to /forums

Just take my config file in the above zip (i refreshed the link because some people where having problems) and change the sql connection information, urls, and paths; and you should at least get your board *online*, then you can run through an upgrade if you wanted or configure your forums features.
I would advise against running a new install; if you do, use a different DB or at least DB Prefix..

Ok, the board is up but my styles are all messed up. Any insight would be helpful to get them working again. Thanks again for any help you can give.

I believe she deleted everthing Gizmo.
Sherri the best thing to do is start re-importing the custom styles. the two stock ones will need to be re-imported also.
I am not sure if sombody has already posted a import file for them here. But your forum/install/styles folder should have them.

Then I'm sure the "problem" is that the stock wrapper was purged, the styles are still there as they exist in the database.. She'll want to go into the style editor and validate that her styles exist, then go into the wrapper editor (also in the style area) and validate that the wrapper exists; if they do then editing one and submitting the page should hopefully rewrite it to the flat file. If the wrapper doesn't exist, the default wrapper is: Opening HTML: <table width="100%" class="t_outer" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
<tr>
<td>
<table width="100%" class="t_inner" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="1"> </table>
</td>
</tr>
</table>

Is that correct? Thanks.

Well it probably is correct depending on the style but you will still need to import them again. Problem is it writes a file name with a timestamp in the name that is written to the database.
You can try gizmo's suggestion but I think it will not work because you deleted everything. I also found that you had a similar problem two years ago. So I would suggest to delete a style and then import it again. using: Control Panel » Styles import style
If you don't delete one first you will need to rename the style with a different name Then you will also need to assign a default style when done.
Try one style and see how it goes.

Yep, looks like you got one style working. FYI, I have done this myself with deleting styles. And it was tough to get it working again. So don't feel like you are the only one that has done this.
