This feels very strange. After 12 years I've decided to let one of my sites go and it's the one that hosts the forum. Reason? Very little traffic now, no time to maintain, content out of date and it was costing me to just have it sitting there. The weirdest thing is that after May I'll no longer be running a forum of any kind but I'm still going to be visiting here. It's just a shame really that I won't get to upgrade to V8 but I don't think I could get my head round it just now anyway. It will be nice though to sit back and see how you guys get on with it. So here's to more posting, reading and annoying driv for some time to come.

That will be a strange feeling, I am sure many of us will feel the same the day we no longer run forums. Sucks that the traffic died down and was costing you money. Glad to hear you will be sticking around to watch us all get into upgrade frenzy when the time comes, lol.

Have you considered selling the site or selling paid links on it? PM me a link to it if you can.
Won't you take me to Funkytown?

For info, I've just got a reply from my host letting me know that the hosting will cease this Friday 6th May. So, here it is, but nothing like it was. When we hosted software (back then it was audiotoolsdirect.com) we were ranked 250,000 by Alexa. Those were pretty amazing days. http://www.audiotoolers.com

Dang SK that is a lot of good info to be just shutting down. Make sure you keep a database from there. Some of those posts are absolutely priceless!
I understand that it costs though. It is why I host my own servers and maintain my forums on my own equipment...however bandwidth isn't cheap even when you are doing it for yourself. If you want I can give you a spot on one of my servers just to keep the info active if nothing else!

I was at a seminar a couple of weeks ago, not about forums but rather Planned Giving and estates. From a Charity view point.
One thing that was pointed out, many went to facebook, and I think we all saw that happen to our forums, but people are coming back to 'like minded forums" I certainly have seen an upswing in traffic on my forum.
It will be nice when folks can do easy registration by importing their info from facebook. I have that option on one of my webdating sites.. and it just makes the process so much easier.
My ads on facebook are so much cheaper and effective then my google ads have been.
I would really recommend to all, to use mindraven for your host. My expenses, and more over my problem dropped to a fraction of what I had before..
At the minimum package, one should be able to get enough adsense income to make any forum fly. be sure to put links on facebook with like minded people.

Ahh mate - you've brought a tear to me eye.... It really is a sad day when something previously so successful has to pass. I went for a nostalgic visit but it already appears to have gone. By the way - I would expect no less than a regular wind up even if you don't have a forum at the mo'. Who knows when the muse will strike again? ..and you'll be back for v8...? Four cheers for ScriptKeeper! Oh yeah

I went for a nostalgic visit but it already appears to have gone. Yes I thought that but it's back again if you want a last peek. Must have been a practice run. BTW, thanks for looking after my sisters at your villa in the Maldives last week. It was very kind of you to go out of your way like that at such short notice. I owe you one.

I think everyone has probably seen a drastic drop in activity due to Face Book, I know I have. I'm hanging in there, though, as I've started to see a bit of a bump up in postings, but not yet enough to jump and down and cheer.

It's gone. I'm officially UBBless. Very sad day for me. Suppose I'll be losing my "UBB 10 YEARS" badge now. Good luck with V8 everyone. I'll be keeping a keen eye on proceedings.

Chin up old son, stiff upper lip and all that!!! Suppose I'll be losing my "UBB 10 YEARS" badge now. Nah mate, there's no denying you kept the UBB flag flying for 10 years. That's a good enough reason for the badge to stay in perpetuum. Like I said, there's no reason why you shouldn't use your licence for a different idea....?

Sorry to hear that SK. I had a very popular forum, one of the most popular for it's subject but sold it like almost 2 years ago due to personal problems. I recently got rid of the personal problem as she had far more chances then anyone else would have ever gotten. Now after 20 years I am happy. I closed my hosting business and stopped working on any computer or server type equipment and currently do not have any plans to do so on the future. I still own the rack that a few of you like so much and maintain the commercial connection and all that and still have it running and pay the up keep on everything but just don't care to use it. But at least I got the coolest setup in town.

Yah, I'd agree you've certainly got the coolest setup I've seen. Makes me drool just looking at it..
