Is it possible to make an entire category with all the included forums 'invisible' such can be done with an individual forum? From what I have found in the CP, a category is either visible or you have to delete it.

no, it's granular at the forum level.

so all forums in the category must be invisible for it to hide itself

Gotcha..... disabled all the forums under the category and the category is no longer visible!
