Well it is not the links but the active threads pages that are formatted different than viewing the actual posts. The reason is active threads does not have all the data view-able like when you view more due to the view topic includes the user posting profile if you are using the profile side option. The default format is 100% table/div width. There is a setting in the cp but that would change all pages.
The setting is not available in the cp,Even the templates. But I am sure it could be hacked to accommodate your needs. But it would be a custom mod. So I suggest to ask over at ubbdev.com

Active Threads are displayed to only 200px height. It's hard coded within the active threads template.
There is no truncating of posts, as that was breaking html formatting, video and image embeds.
Instead the first 200px height of the post is displayed, with a READ MORE button on the bottom right of each item, to go to the thread and view.the whole.post within it.
Isacc, I think the issue was when viewing active topics there is not a profile cell on the left so the wordwrap is different than viewing it as the actual post where the profile data is showing. Let the user confirm.
But back to custom mod.
