Is this possible? I know we can set the color of the text but it would be nice if we could let people select a background color too.

If you're talking about changing the color of an area within a style, you would have to understand CSS and feel comfortable with using the style editor that is within the control panel.
There is information on creating and editing styles if you use the search function on these forums.

No, just wondered if there was an easy way for users to colorize their post ala FB.

On a different note, is it possible to change color of the links in the custom portals? I would like certain links to stand out from others, but so far the only way I've found is using the <b> <i> tags etc.

But bear in mind most users are used to seeing a blue font for links

No, just wondered if there was an easy way for users to colorize their post ala FB. This is not an option that is offered within UBB.threads. Colored links would be handled via CSS, example: <a href="https://www.example.com/" style="color: #ff0000;"></a> Styling/CSS on various items would be better suited Google Searches, as they have to do with basic HTML/CSS and are not UBB.threads specific.
