How do I change a member's user group?
For example, I want to move some from "Users" to a custom group I created. This custom group is also for those who sign up for a subscription. Can I add users to this group without them having a subscription?

Okay in a nutshell. As a general rule Changing or add groups to a member is done via the member manage section of the control panel. But never uncheck the default user group.Just add the group or groups you want them to have.
FYI. If you have subscriptions enabled they will be automatically added to the subscription group when they subscribe. They will automatically be removed from the subscription group when they expire or cancel.
If you promote them via number of posts they will automatically be added to the group. via the control panel groups section
With that said yes you can also add them manually for any reason in the member manage group section

Is there a way to add them to a new group without having to add # of posts, etc...?
I have members who support the site via Donorbox. Is there a way to add them to the member group I have set up for those who sign up for paid subscriptions?

That is your choice if you wish them to pay then the posts count values should be blank for that group. If you use something outside of the built in UBB subscriptions model (Donorbox)then you will need to manually add them to a group and monitor when to delete them from the group

Make changes and submit. Remember not to remove the default user group.

Another fyi If you added a group image the user will need to select it themselves now in their profile. Here I have like five of them so I do not display all of them.
