Hi,
Our forum is version 7.5.5 and its old with 12000+ members Basic members are USER group upgraded Premium members are in group USERS + PREMIUM
We have had trouble with scammers in USER group that send malicious links in PM's to other members.
what if I create a new Default Group(s) for New Members and name it for example "NOVICE" If I keep same rights as the USER group but disable PM's for that group and then set a value of "5" posts before they become USER with PM rights?
If I do this what will happen with existing USERs that have not yet posted 5 times?
PS I am all ears of other suggestions
thanks

Nothing as long as you leave them in the user group and not move them to the NOVICE group. If you are that concerned about the spammers I would also make the novice group have moderated posts.

Sounds like a good setup to me, especially disabling pms for that new default group as Rube suggested.
As the existing users are already in the graduated group they won't end up in the novice permission group

I created a new "Novice" group and put new registered members there. They cannot use PM or Shout or email other members
when they posted 5 times they are moved to USER group.
It will give me a better chance to discover spammers cause they tend not to post relevant posts within thread or site topics.
Thanks for your advise

Thanks for your advise We've been doing this for a while now. We also moderate their posts, so nothing becomes public unless approved by a moderator or admin. That keeps the scammers/spammers from posting to the forums as well. More than once we have ended up catching someone and banning them from the forum when they posted something inappropriate that was moderated.
