As of October 21 2026, the highest version is PHP 8.5.12. There is no more higher version. Though, unlike your post assumes, the higher the version number does not mean the most recent release of a software. Previous versions of software get patched for many reasons. In this case the reason is for a security exploit, php2shell (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619).
The patched versions are:
• PHP 8.5.12
• PHP 8.4.27
• PHP 8.3.36
• PHP 8.2.35
From The PHP Group; Only actively supported PHP branches (8.2 and newer) receive official security fixes. Previous versions of PHP are unsupported and will not receive patches.
"PHP 8.1 and older no longer receive updates from the PHP project. Some distributions and LTS vendors provide backported fixes, so contact your vendor for details, or upgrade to a supported version"
