Is it possible to take a very popular or relevant Topic and 'promote' it to a Forum in it's own right? Or, take a Topic which is going interestingly 'off topic' and split it into a new Topic of its own?

Obviously, I am looking for a method whereby this is 'automatic' or at least wouldn't involve copying and pasting messages - but even this wouldn't retain Member information etc.

Thanks

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by promoting a topic to a forum. You can move an entire topic to an existing forum, but you can't make an existing topic into a new forum on its own. (Well, not without creating the forum first). But I think I've missed the point - let me know..

As far as splitting up topics, there was some discussion on this issue recently but it currently isn't possible. OpenTopic allows it, I don't know about Threads, but UBB doesn't. One of the biggest obstacles will be figuring out how to do the UI component..

If I follow correctly, you're looking for a way to take a popular topic and actually make it evolve into a forum, on it's own, based on, say, a post count? Definitely interesting thought, but not possible. . . Well, not with the out-of-the-"box" product. Basically, it would be a formatting thing. I don't know that any software program would be intelligent enough to know how to divide the topic/forum in such a way as to make several little topics within the forum. . . and now i'm just spouting off incoherent thought processes. . . interesting though. . .

Yes Kate, that's it exactly.

It's not so much a 'parameter' like a post count, more an 'editorial' decision on the part of the Forum moderator or Webmaster that when they see an interesting Topic developing, which takes on a life of it's own, they could decide the subject matter is important enough to become a Forum in it's own right.

Therefore, the new Forum could be created and old Topic could be 'moved' to become the first in the new Forum. It's the proceedure of moving a Topic 'automatically' which I would like to achieve, without 'manually' transferring every message by hand (even if that were possible).

Hope that makes sense!

Maybe I missed something in your question but I don't understand what you mean by having to move each message by hand. If you choose to move a topic to a new forum every message within that topic goes with it.

All you need to do is when a topic gets to a point that you feel it deserves it's own forum is
1. Go to your admin panel and create the new forum.
2. Return to your message board and open the topic you wish to move.
3. At the bottom of the topic click "move topic" then choose the new forum you created for where to move it to.

3 easy steps and you are done.
