149 × Intel Optane Persistent Memory 300 Series (Crow Pass), 128GB each
19,072 GB (about 19 TB) of persistent memory for DDR5 server slots, in one lot. That is enough to fill nine dual-socket Sapphire Rapids servers with 16 modules each, with 5 spares.
DDR5 slots only. These modules are keyed for DDR5 server DIMM slots. They will not fit DDR4 slots, and they are not the DDR4-based Optane 100 or 200 series (part numbers starting NMA1 or NMB1). They also need a 4th Gen Xeon processor and a mainboard whose BIOS supports Optane PMem 300. See Compatibility below. Why this lot
- 128GB DDR5 RDIMMs have been selling for $3,000 to $4,000+ each on this fall. Optane PMem adds large capacity on the same memory bus for a small fraction of that cost.
- Byte-addressable and persistent. In App Direct mode, data stays in place through reboots and power loss.
- The final generation of Optane persistent memory. Intel quotes an average of 56% more sequential bandwidth and 214% more random bandwidth than the 200 series.
- Good fits: large-model AI and LLM inference, in-memory databases and caches, analytics, higher VM density, and persistent-memory software development.
What is in the lot
- 149 modules, 128GB each (127.3 GiB usable per module, per Intel).
- Part numbers on the labels include NMC2XBD128G2S (PBA K90600-115, built 2021) and NMC2XAD128G2S (PBA K90600-230, built late 2021). Labels read "Engineering Samples" (pre-production units); see photos.
- Assembled in Taiwan. Packed in bags of about 25.
- Untested and sold as-is. My own servers are all DDR4, so I have no system that can run these, which is why I am selling them.
- Used. Normal handling marks on the heat spreaders.

Processors: 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable "Sapphire Rapids" (LGA-4677). Intel's PMem 300 support table lists Xeon Gold 5400, Gold 6400 and Platinum 8400 series.
Not supported: 5th Gen Xeon "Emerald Rapids" and newer (Intel dropped Optane PMem support from 5th Gen onward), Xeon Silver and Bronze, AMD platforms, desktop DDR5 boards, and any DDR4 system (1st to 3rd Gen Xeon Scalable).
Mainboards: The board BIOS must enable Optane PMem 300. Supermicro advertises PMem 300 support on X13 platforms including:
- X13QEH+ (4 sockets, 64 DIMM slots): "Up to 16TB PMem 300 Series Memory"
- X13OEI-CPU (8-socket SYS-681E-TR system board, 32 DIMM slots): "Up to 8TB PMem 300 Series Memory"
- B13SEE-CPU-25G (X13 SuperBlade node, 16 DIMM slots): "Supports Intel Optane persistent memory 300 series"
- Supermicro's X13 brochure also lists X13 Hyper (X13DEM), X13 SuperBlade, X13 SuperEdge, SSG-121E-NES24R (X13DSF-A), and the 4- and 8-way SYS-241H-TNRTTP, SYS-241E-TNRTTP and SYS-681E-TR.
Check your board's BIOS for PMem 300 support before buying. On boards that take both 4th and 5th Gen Xeon, PMem 300 only works with a 4th Gen CPU installed.
Population (Intel guidelines): One PMem module per memory channel, in the second slot of a 2-DIMM-per-channel board, with a DDR5 RDIMM in the same channel. Common layouts per CPU: 8 RDIMMs + 8 PMem, 8 + 4, or 4 + 4. Populate both CPUs the same way. Do not mix with Optane 100/200, and do not share a channel with 16GB single-rank x8 RDIMMs or 9x4 RDIMMs. Eight 128GB modules per CPU give 1 TB of persistent memory per socket.
Software: Standard ACPI NVDIMM interface. On Linux, set up with ndctl and daxctl (fsdax or devdax). App Direct mode is supported; Memory Mode depends on the board BIOS.
