Have you ever wanted to develop your own games for the Tandy Color Computer 2 or Coco2 or simply just play games? This board will let you develop your own game or flash your ROM(s) of choice.
WHAT YOU GET
YOU GET THE ASSEMBLED BOARD -- COLOR IS UPON AVAILABILITY. YOU ALSO GET ONE BRAND NEW Winbond W27C512 (64KB x 8) EEPROM.
You have to provide your own programmer! But the best one I found on is the MiniPro USB TL866CS Programmer. It can program a lot of chips, including the Winbond W27C512 EEPROM.
INFORMATION ON THE BOARD
This PCB design is for an EPROM-based ROM cartridge for the Tandy/TRS-80 Color Computer. It can accept only 2732, 2764, 27128, 27256 or 27512 EPROMs/EEPROMs. The photos show a completely assembled board using the Winbond W27C512 (64KB) EERPROM, which you can get more very cheaply on . Do NOT buy EPROMs (single 'E', as they can only programmed ONCE and are old! Buy the Winbond W27C512 EEPROM, which you can reprogram it many times!) The photos show the W27C512 is installed as the U2 on the board, and the JP2/JP3 jumpers are used to select one of the FOUR 16KB programs, 3 games (Silpheed, Arkanoid, Chess) and the EDTASM (Assembly Language editor). Each of these programs is EXACTLY 16384 bytes, that is, 16KB aligned when flashed onto the W27C512. I used the TL866 universal programmer to flash the concatenated 64KB binary from the four mentioned 16KB binaries.
Each ROM image MUST be 16KB (16384 bytes) EXACTLY in size, so that each game can be switched to. That means you must have a way to pad a ROM less than 16384 bytes to become 16384 bytes in size. You concatenate four 16KB ROMs into one single binary file and flash it to the EEPROM with your programmer. In DOS, the sample command of concatenate four binary files into one is below. 'final_rom.bin' is the result ROM file that you can flash onto the EEPROM. You need to substitute for real file names in the below command, of course. Note: If your 16 KB ROM is split into two 8 KB files, concatenate them as well, with the "low" ROM before the "high" ROM.
copy /b rom1.bin + /b rom2.bin + /b rom3.bin + /b rom4.bin final_rom.bin
Additional jumper info for the board. The PCB design for an EPROM-based ROM cartridge for the Tandy/TRS-80 Color Computer. It can accept on 2732, 2764, 27128, 27256 or 27512 EPROM. Board thickness must be 0.062". When using 27256 or larger EPROMs, the EPROM is divided into 2-4 16k banks which can be selected with jumper settings. Jumper settings are also important for 27256 and smaller EPROMs in order to apply the correct power and control signals to the EPROM correct power and control signals to the EPROM.
