Afterthe mixed reception to Universal's 2003 filmHulk,Marvel Studios reacquired the rights to the character thoughUniversal retained distribution rights. Leterrier, who had expressedinterest in directingIronManforMarvel, was brought onboard and Penn began work on a script thatwould be much closer to the comics and the1978television series of the same name.In April 2007, Norton was hired to portray Banner and to rewritePenn's screenplay. His script positioned the film as arebootofthe series, distancing it from the 2003 film to give the new versionits own identity. Norton was ultimately not credited for his writing.Filming took place from July to November 2007, primarilyinToronto,Canada,with additional filming inNewYork CityandRiode Janeiro.Over 700 visual effects shots were created in post-production using acombination the film.

It received generally favorable reviews and was consideredto be an improvement over the 2003 film. The film grossed $264.8million worldwide, making it thelowest-grossingfilmofthe MCU. Norton disputed with Marvel over the final edit of the filmand was replaced in the role of Banner byMarkRuffaloforfuture MCU content starting withTheAvengersin2012.
