When turned on, some of these units display an AMD Geode NX-1500 processor on the boot screen, while others display an AMD Athlon.

They are the exact same processor. The Geode chip is built directly on the Athlon architecture. Depending on the BIOS software version installed on the motherboard, the system simply reads the processor's ID differently when it boots up. One version displays the broader family name (Athlon), while the other displays the specific product name (Geode).

What this really means is there is zero difference in performance, speed, or hardware. Both are 1GHz chips doing the exact same job. It is strictly a cosmetic difference in the text displayed on the screen.
