What we did to it

• Maxed out the memory at 16GB. That is as far as this model goes, and it is the upgrade that matters most on a machine this age.
• Clean Windows 11 Pro. Installed from clean media, activated, updated and tested, then sealed so it arrives at the out-of-box setup screen and the first account created on it is yours. No bloatware, no accounts of ours. It runs Windows 11 well for everyday work.
• Measured the battery rather than estimating it: 99.98% of design capacity on zero charge cycles, which is effectively a new battery.
• Prefer Linux? Message us before you buy and we will ship it with Linux installed instead of Windows, at no charge. On hardware of this generation Linux is lighter and quicker than Windows 11, and it keeps getting updates. Pick one:
  • Linux Mint — the easiest switch from Windows; familiar layout, light on this hardware.
  • Ubuntu — the most widely used, with the most guides and help online.
  • Fedora — newer software, clean GNOME desktop that suits touch and pen use.
  • Debian — rock-solid and conservative; set it up and leave it.
  • Something else? Ask — if it runs on this machine, we will install it.

Cosmetic condition

Fair to good — very good for a machine from 2011, but it is not flawless, and every mark below is in the photos:

• A faint white spot near the bottom-centre of the screen, visible on light backgrounds and not all the time. It is not a dead pixel and does not affect touch or pen input.
• Light marks on the screen surface.
• One rubber foot is missing from the palmrest.

The photos are of the exact machine you will receive, shot close up rather than at a flattering angle.

What to know before you buy

Windows 11 on this processor is not officially supported by Microsoft. The 2nd-generation Core i5 is older than Microsoft's Windows 11 support list. It installs, activates and runs well, and updates install today, but Microsoft does not promise that will continue on unsupported hardware. If that matters to you, take us up on the free Linux install offer above, which has no such limit.

It is a 2011 machine. Ideal for writing, notes, browsing, pen work and the keyboard people buy X220s for. It is not a machine for gaming or heavy video editing.

The screen is 1366 × 768. That is the only resolution the X220 Tablet was made with.

Warranty & returns. 30 days. If it fails in that window, send it back and we refund you in full. This machine is long out of Lenovo factory coverage, so our 30 days is the warranty. Shipped in a padded laptop sleeve inside a box cut close to the machine, with the dock and chargers packed separately so nothing rests on the screen. Questions before you buy? Message us through .
