OTHER REASONS WHY A PS/2 KEYBOARD/MOUSE COMBO OVER USB
1.- You are likely to use the majority of the USB ports on your Desktop over time. The best way to free up your USB ports is to use the PS/2 mini-DIN connectors for Keyboard and Mouse on your computer if it has them.
2.- The usage of USB ports on your computer has a noticeable impact on the performance of the computer overall, even though that is oftentimes not stated. Your computer is feeding power to your USB devices through the USB ports, that is why you can charge some USB devices plugged to those ports. You never know how much you are allowed. An over-consumption or near threshold consumption of power by your USB devices may cause the computer to function erratically, malfunction for no apparent reason like slow processing or even freeze or crash. The more branching the lower the speed rate. So the USB trunk or bus can only be used for transmission by one device at a time. 5.- PS/2 ports are not polled by the computer CPU, unlike USB ports. Keystroke i.e. are immediately registered by the CPU in interrupt requests, to which processing will be applied in due course. By avoiding time waste in polling instances where it is not needed due to inactivity, PS/2 ports allow your computer CPU to perform or process faster.
6.- Very specifically, PS/2 ports process nearly 10 times as fast as USB 2.0 counterparts (2.83 ms v. 18.77 ms), as has been objectively measured shortly after introduction of the USB standard. While, on the one hand, USB transfers six commands at a time from keyboard to computer, which could well be insufficient for a fast typist, PS/2, on the other hand, transmits continuously, so considerably reducing latency.
7.- Last but not least, PS/2 ports can be very helpfulto the technician when restoring damaged operating systems presenting with "hanging" during certain part of boot process. That is because it is a very simple protocol, and the simple PS/2 drivers can be loaded at very early stage of booting process. So better for troubleshooting.
