RARE Commodore 1540 Disk Drive (Working)The Commodore 1540 (also known as the VIC-1540) is an intelligent 5.25-inch floppy disk drive released by Commodore in 1982 as a peripheral companion for the VIC-20 home computer. It holds up to 170 KB of formatted data per single-sided disk and uses the Commodore Serial Bus interface.
It was specifically timed to match the bus requirements and video architecture of the VIC-20, allowing for quick data exchange within its design parameters.
NOTE: This drive was "upgraded" to also run on the Commodore 64. The UAB5 ROM (325303) was swaped with a (901229) ROM.Replacing the original 1540 internal ROM chip with a 1541 ROM version allows the hardware (which is functionally identical) to slow its timing down and communicate properly with the Commodore 64
I am unfortunately forced to downsize my collection.
This drive has been sitting in storage for approx. 15-20 years.
I have done minimal testing with a C64. I have only loaded a couple disks and formatted one disk.
It probably could use a thorough cleaning , greased rails, and head cleaning.
The shell has some minor scuffs and abrasions. Please refer to pictures.
Overall it is in very good condition.
