This is an incredibly rare piece of computing history: theIntel Web Tablet (Model 10). Announced in the late 90s and abruptly canceled by Intel in September 2001, just weeks before its commercial launch. This device is a legendary "Information Appliance" that almost changed the way we use the internet.
Most of these units were recalled and destroyed, making surviving examples a must-have for vintage computer collectors and museum curators. The Intel Web Tablet (internally codenamed"Blackbird") is a fascinating "what if" in tech history. Scrapped in late 2001—nearly a decade before the iPad—it was powered by anIntel StrongARM SA-1110processor.
Technical Specifications
The SA-1110 was a popular choice for handhelds of that era (also found in many Compaq iPAQ models).
Clock Speed:Approximately206 MHz.
Operating System:It ranWind River’s VxWorks, though it was designed to function primarily as a "web companion" for a PC rather than a standalone computer.
Why was it called the "Original iPad"?
While "iPad" is Apple's trademark, the Intel Web Tablet is often retroactively compared to it because it shared the same core vision: a slate-style, portable touchscreen device meant for casual browsing and media consumption.
The Cancellation
Intel pulled the plug on the device just weeks before it was set to hit shelves (some units had even been shipped to retailers like Circuit City). The official reason was a strategic pivot to avoid competing with their own PC manufacturing customers (OEMs like Dell and HP), who saw the tablet as a threat to the traditional desktop and laptop ecosystem.
Essentially, Intel decided that selling processors to PC makers was more profitable than selling a finished consumer device that might annoy those same partners.
