STB Systems Sprint/32 PCI Trident TGUI9440AGi 1MB VGA Card🏃 A Windows Accelerator from the Dawn of PCI
Offered here is an authentic STB Systems Sprint/32 PCI graphics card, manufactured in 1995 and built around the Trident TGUI9440AGi graphics controller.
This card comes from the transitional period when PCI was replacing ISA and VESA Local Bus in mainstream PCs—and when “graphics acceleration” usually meant making Windows redraw substantially faster, rather than rendering three-dimensional game worlds.
The Sprint/32 accelerated commonly used graphical operations such as window movement, text and image transfers, line drawing, rectangle and polygon fills, BitBLT operations and hardware cursor display. That made it a practical upgrade for Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups, Windows 95 and other graphical software of the period.
⭐ Built by STB Systems of Richardson, Texas
STB Systems was founded in Richardson, Texas, in 1981 and grew into one of the largest American graphics-card manufacturers of the 1990s.
The company supplied graphics and multimedia hardware for retail customers as well as major PC manufacturers. STB was acquired by 3dfx Interactive in 1999, shortly before the famous Voodoo manufacturer began selling complete graphics cards under its own name.
This board was assembled at STB’s manufacturing operation in Mexico and carries the original ASSEMBLED IN MEXICO marking.
For collectors in North Texas, it is also a small piece of genuinely local computer-industry history.
🖥️ Trident TGUI9440AGi Graphics
The Trident TGUI9440AGi was a dedicated 2D GUI accelerator with an integrated TrueColor display DAC and support for both PCI and VESA Local Bus implementations.
This particular card is the 32-bit PCI version.
Hardware features include:
- Accelerated BitBLT operations
- Hardware cursor support
- Accelerated text and image transfers
- Line and vector drawing
- Rectangle and polygon fills
- Integrated 24-bit TrueColor DAC
- Display support up to 1280 × 1024, depending upon memory and color depth
- Standard analog VGA monitor output
- No cooling fan or external power connection required
This is a 2D Windows and VGA accelerator, not a later hardware 3D accelerator.
🧠 1MB Installed—Expandable to 2MB
The card contains two Texas Instruments TMS45160DZ-60 Fast Page DRAM devices.
Each memory chip is organized as 256K × 16 bits and provides 512KB of storage. Together, the two installed devices supply 1MB of video memory.
Two additional brown SOJ memory sockets are present for expansion:
- Installed memory: 1MB
- Maximum supported memory: 2MB
- Installed memory speed: 60ns
- Memory type: Fast Page DRAM
- Expansion required: Two compatible 256K × 16 SOJ DRAM devices
The empty sockets are original memory-expansion positions and are not missing connectors or removed components.
Increasing the card to 2MB would permit additional combinations of resolution and color depth supported by the chipset and period drivers.
🔍 Identification and Markings
The card has been identified using multiple matching component and regulatory markings:
- Manufacturer: STB Systems, Inc.
- Model: Sprint/32 PCI
- PCB number: 210-0168-001
- Product/assembly number: 1X0-0311-007
- FCC ID: EKSUSA9440PCI
- Graphics controller: Trident TGUI9440AGi
- Chip marking: 45TR26/9445
- Installed memory: Two TI TMS45160DZ-60 devices
- Video BIOS label: SPRINT 32 PCI/VL 1.0
- PCB revision: Rev A
- Rear production label: 17/1995
- Assembly marking: ASSEMBLED IN MEXICO
Although the video BIOS label mentions both PCI/VL, this physical card uses a PCI edge connector, and its FCC registration specifically identifies it as the PCI version.
