FOR SALE: Check Point 3600 (aka QB-1) six-port Gigabit router/firewall running OPNsense.
With stock operating system, the device is still in support with the manufacturer. To decouple the device from the manufacturer's licensing and services, we have installed and configured OPNsense, an open-source operating system for networking equipment.
To test the device and make port functions consistent with on-device labeling, we made a few changes to the initial OPNsense configuration. A detailed configuration note will be provided to the buyer. Alternatively, the buyer could simply reset the software to its initial state.
The device runs on an IntelAtom C3558 processor (quad-core, 2.20 GHz) with 8 GB of RAM and a 480 GB Samsung SSD (the device came to us without a boot drive, so we installed one; the stock drives on this device, as far as we know, are 240 GB Intel SSDs). Networking (six Gigabit ports) is handled by Intel network interface cards, four x553 and two i211.
The device has a BIOS password, which we do not know and were unable to remove by conventional techniques. This said, the locked BIOS does not appear to present any problems operating the device with an alternative operating system.
The device is implemented in a desktop form factor. The case is all metal and exceptionally rigid.
The device is actively cooled. Under normal operating conditions, the fan is subjectively quiet; the sound is bassy, as opposed to whiny.
The device is in very good physical condition (please review the photos). A power supply unit with a threaded coupling (no more accidental unplugging!) is included. If you're interested in purchasing a second power supply to take advantage of the device's redundant power intakes, please let us know; we have compatible power supplies in stock and should be able to adjust this listing in a short order.
